Title: Back to Back
Canon: FMA
Characters: Maes Hughes & Roy Mustang
Rating: PG
Summary: Inspired by this piece. "I'm going to change it." Indolent and lazy - that's how Roy sounds and anyone else might think those words are nothing but pride and greed rolled up into one man with too much power at the tips of his fingers. They might even be right.
Disclaimer: Yes we all know that I don't own FMA.

He's scheming again. Roy doesn't have to say a word for Hughes to know exactly what is running through the alchemist's mind. He hears it in so many different ways: the set of Roy's shoulder against his, the click of dog tags between his teeth.

Hughes closes his eyes and he can see Roy's expression perfectly - eyes slightly narrowed, lips just so around the warming metal.

Click. Click.

"What revolution are you planning today?" Hughes asks in a lazy tone, arms crossing in front him as Roy leans even harder against his back.

"Hmmm? Oh, it's nothing." Roy isn't nearly as distracted as he sounds.

"It's something; I can smell the fire."

"The world needs to change, Maes." Roy doesn't say his first name very often and never when other people are around. It's his way of trying to protect Maes, protect them. Hughes never has the heart to tell him that it's not that simple, that if Roy is serious -

"That's what all kids our age say." Yet he knows Roy is right even if he can't exactly say why - a nebulous feeling he's always had, or so it seems.

"I'm going to change it." Indolent and lazy - that's how Roy sounds and anyone else might think those words are nothing but pride and greed rolled up into one man with too much power at the tips of his fingers. They might even be right. Except for one thing.

"It'll get messy."

"I know." A faint quiver in Roy's voice. Alchemists always realize there is a price to be paid. Equivalent Exchange. Roy though, he feels that price in a way most do not. "But who else can do the job?" Ahh there's that tone back, just as Hughes expects. Now Maes smiles - just one corner of his mouth.

Alchemists are arrogant assholes nearly across the board; assured of their power, confident in their rightness, too smart for their own damn good. Roy's no different, but Hughes loves him all the same. So he'll just have to be there right? Make sure that The Flame Alchemist doesn't burn himself alive.
