“No, Roy don’t do this….please.”  She begged him with what little voice and little breathe that she has left. Her hand, slick with her own blood, held onto his uniform jacket with feeble strength.  “Everything we are will be undone.”  Each breath came harder and she could see the tears in eyes.  Tears which blinded him to everything else.

Marco sat at his kitchen table and empty liquor bottles spill out in front of him.  Rejected.  From the Academy, from the military, for the State Alchemists.  He growled and opened another bottle.  He’d failed the tests and after a very robotic speech they had sent him on his way.  Especially that smug asshole, Mustang.  The touted Flame Alchemist had gone so far as to look bored during Marco’s fire demonstration.  Sure he might not be as impressive as the asshole General, but really could they expect that?

“Don’t worry, Riza.  Everything is going to be all right.”  He takes her hands in his and ignores the pleading look in her eyes now that she no longer has the strength to speak.  Her lips work with words that make no sound and she tries to hold tight to him even as he lays her down on the cold floor and stands up.  Her tears almost prove his undoing.

Marco didn’t know how long he’d been asleep when the knock on his door comes.  Glass bottles hit the ground and a few even break in a brilliant splatter of glass.

“Shit, Damnit.”  He cusses and looks to the door when whoever it is knocks insistently again.  “I’m coming, keep your damn pants on!”  He opens the door and his mouth widens in drunken shock

She gasps her last breathe and still she stares at him with those wide reddish brown eyes.  Those eyes still speak her final plea to him.

“I’m sorry Riza.”  Roy reaches forward and closes her eyes and wipes the last traces of tears from her eyes.  Some promises just can’t be kept.

“What in the hell are you doing here, lady?”  Her nose sniffed the air and then wrinkled in disgust.  She pushed past his which proved easy given his state of inebriation.   Her cold eyes roamed around his cluttered room filled with the proof of lack of self worth.

“I’m going to help you get your revenge.”  She said as she turned towards him.  Never once did she blink or did her expression change.  He’d seen her before and even then the mere look of her had frightened him.  She was no less frightening in person.

“Help me?”  He laughed harshly and spat on the ground.  “No one can help me, lady.   I’m washed up.  I can’t get in the military.  I can’t be a State Alchemist.  They already have their precious Furher in training, General Mustang.”

Two days and screaming didn’t stop.  Roy didn’t think it was possible for anyone to be in so much pain.  The voice in the back of his head that sounded suspiciously like her reminds him that she isn’t human anymore.  He ignores it and chooses to believe she just needs more time to heal….and to stop hating him so much.

She grabbed him suddenly.  Her hand was so much stronger than it had any right to be.  Her cold, callous eyes dug into him until Marco felt this woman could lay him bare with her eyes alone.

“Listen to me, fool.  I can teach you everything you ever wanted to know about flame alchemy.  I can make you the star of the military you want so desperately to be.”  He almost wet himself, yet she offered him the one thing he wanted the most.  He was every bit the fool she called him because he nodded in agreement.  Some people just don’t care when they make a deal with Devil.

Months pass and he thinks she’s getting better.  He’s glad because it’s getting harder to make up excuses as to why she’s still on leave.  It takes a few more days to coax her back to HQ and even longer to get her to look at him.  When she does look at him for the first time in so long, Roy cannot find happiness in the moment.  Her eyes watch him without emotion, without any feeling in them at all.

“It’ll change,” He thinks.  “She’s making progress.

Fire raged around Roy Mustang, but for once he wasn’t the cause.   A man stood in front him and laughed without a trace of sanity.

“How do you think I’m doing now, Flame Alchemist?”  The man, Roy thought his name was Marco, sneers at him.  “Am I good enough now?”  He pointed the odd contraptions on the back of hands at Roy again and prepared to unleash another firey salvo at the downed Alchemist.

However, Roy Mustang, hadn’t earned and kept the title of Flame Alchemist for no reason.  He’s well versed in his art and Marco had made on dire miscalculation.  Even though Roy’s gloves had been destroyed, he didn’t need them to control fire.  With a hasty array drawn on the back of his arm, Roy changed the direction of the fire as it hit him and sent it right back at his aggressor.

The devices on Marco’s arms exploded the moment the heat from the fire penetrated the metal.  He screamed and fell backwards.  Then a shot rang out in the inferno and the screaming man didn’t scream anymore.

“What am I, Roy?  What is this thing you’ve made?”  He doesn’t have an answer for her.

Tired, worn out through and through, Roy watched as she walked through the fire with the carbon shield protecting her body.  She stood in front him and watched with those inhuman eyes.  His Greed, his Sin, and his greatest shame.  She leveled the gun at him and the shield pulled away from her face.  In the end he wasn’t that surprised.  All the little signs had been there all along.  All those things that had told that whatever she was, she wasn’t his Riza anymore.

“Kill me.  Do it before I kill you.”  She almost begs of him.  The conflicting emotions of love and hatred in her heart make even being in the same room as him unbearable.  She can’t stay away though.  No matter how hard she tries.

“Riza, I can’t.”  His hands drop to his sides and he watches pain and anger twist her angelic face into something demonic.  “Forgive me.”

“I forgive you, Roy.”  She said right before she pulls the trigger and put a bullet in his head.  “But some promises have to be kept.”  Tears, inhuman blood tinted tears, leaked from her eyes as his body hit the ground.  She felt free and horribly alone.  The creature made in the imperfect image of Riza Hawkeye fell to her knees next to his body as all she had to live for, love and hatred, climaxed in the act of taking his life.

“Riza, we can make this world a better place.  I know we can.”  A younger and much less naïve Riza Hawkeye looks up at him.

“I’ll help you, Sir, I promise.”

Yes some promises were to be kept.  So the homunculus stood up with the body of Roy Mustang cradled in her arms.  She would make this world what he wanted…or burn it to the ground.
